Mapping a Global Experience

The image I selected comes from the day we visited the Museum of Modern Art, and features me and Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night. When my roommate took the picture, I’m not sure what she was thinking, but I’m sure that she saw the wonder in my eyes that came from being in the same room as an incredibly well-known piece of art. I’d seen prints of this art for as long as I can remember. There was a poster of it in my elementary school art class, an episode of Doctor Who that featured it, the whole nine yards.

The artistically-stunted part of me wants to say that I love this piece because van Gogh managed to visualize turbulence centuries before science was able to. But there’s more than that; it’s a representation of what can be accomplished even with so many odds stacked against you.

This picture encompasses the self-discovery I experienced on the trip, as well as my exposure to any kind of art without running away screaming.
