I’ve Travelled the Wide, Wide World

3/29 & 3/31: This week was devoted to revisiting the topics of identity and globalization/imperialism in our Journeys destination as a course-wide assignment.

The most obvious aspect of globalization I witnessed in New York was the proximity of a plethora of cultures in such a small area. Travelling one block up and a few blocks over meant that you jumped from a place where everything was Italian to the bustling social life of Chinatown. And while the exchange of aspects of certain cultures was incredibly beneficial, I feel that there’s a taboo surrounding crossing over and sharing.

I also saw, in the tenement museum, how the tastings made it seem like all of these people were so ready to share their culture through food, but each group historically kept to themselves.
