Redefining Renfroe- Final Budget Proposal and Cost Benefit Analysis

This document is the final budget proposal that I created for the Renfroe Food Waste Project. I included all of the necessary materials to begin composting, recycling, and using reusable forks in the cafeteria. Our budget was $1000 and the total for this proposal was less than that. (The composting cost and final cost is redacted for privacy reasons.) This left some money left in the budget for signage, recycling bin liners, replacement costs for utensils, etc. Although we did not end up utilizing all of the parts of this proposal for the final project, it was helpful as a starting point.

The Cost Benefit Analysis is included below.

Unfortunately, because Renfroe does not pay directly for the pick-up of their trash or recycle, the benefits of this project cannot be quantified monetarily (through any kind of financial means). Therefore, this analysis is just based on the costs of the project.

In this break-down I first start with the number of days school is in session, the amount of students served in the cafeteria each day, and the number of utensils (forks in particular) needed. I also looked at composting costs and the number of days Renfroe would need this service.

Then, I move to the difference between costs in reusable forks, compostable forks, and single-use (landfill) forks. The cost for reusable forks is dramatically lower than either of the other options. However, I do note that there is an unknown cost of water and energy to clean the reusable forks, and that there would need to be someone to hired (or reassigned) to clean them every day as well.

Finally, I calculated the estimated cost for composting (based on prior estimates), however for privacy concerns, I will not include them in this post.
