In New York You Can Be A New Man

“In New York you can be a new man”- Monday, March 7th            ‘The Ellis Island Immigration museum is found in the building thousands of immigrants per day came through in order to build their new life in America. In the registry room, these immigrants waited for inspection and hoped that they would be allowed to enter the country
showtime
What time is it? Showtime! `                       We had the chance to see six shows in seven days, and I’m still floored by this chance we had to experience theater in a way that Walton and Agnes never could give to me.

These New York City streets get colder- Monday, March 9th It was so disgustingly cold by the water and on the ferry on the day we went to Liberty and Ellis Islands, my poor Southern soul couldn't take it.

I was not ready for how cold our first week in New York was. I’m from Georgia, so it normally starts getting really warm around early March. But what I wasn’t expecting was how much colder it was during our time in Battery Park and on Liberty and Ellis Islands. (photo credit: Rhiannon Matthews)
There's nothing rich folks love more, than going downtown and slumming it with the poor- Tuesday, March 8th Jacob Riis is notorious for his series of photographs of life in New York's tenements. Look around, look around, the Revolution is happening in New York- Tuesday, March 8th/Thursday, March 10th Another exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York detailed 14 activism movements that have occurred in New York City, from the fight for religious freedom in the early 17th century through LGBT+ liberation, a movement that is still in action today

Another exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York detailed 14 activist movements that have occurred in New York City, from the fight for religious freedom in the early 17th century through LGBT+ liberation, a movement which is still in action today. This was such a fascinating exhibit that I took advantage of the flexible time to go back and revisit some of the movements that I knew little about, as well as realize that a lot of these movements weren’t as long ago as I thought they were.
We ride at midnight with Manhattan in the distance- Wednesday, March 9th I wasn't ready for how many times we were going to be on a subway. I, as someone who craves personal space, had issues with the idea of being shoved into a tin can with a lot of people. But at the end of a long day, you really don't notice while you're counting the number of stops you have left. (photo credit: Rhiannon Matthews)

I wasn’t ready for how many times we were going to be on a subway. I, as someone who craves personal space, had issues with the idea of being shoved into an underground tin can with a lot of people. But at midnight after a show, it’s amazing how empty the 1 train can get. (photo credit: Rhiannon Matthews)
Ready to face whatever's awaiting me in NYC- Saturday, March 5th Yes, mornings aren't my thing. But I was so ready to get on the plane and find out what SUMMIT had in store for the two groups that would be in the Big Apple for a week

"Raised enough for me to book passage on a ship that was New York bound"- Monday, March 7th I feel like a lot of things that immigrants experienced, we can't even imagine. Being crammed onto a boat for months at a time, and all one could do was hope that they wouldn't be sent back to where they came from once they made landfall.
