Work Experience

The Center for Writing and Speaking

When I was a first year at Agnes Scott, I was accepted through their competitive application process to work as a tutor at the Center for Writing and Speaking. Over my three years working here since I was a sophomore, the CWS has become my home on campus. As tutor, I get to work with students on any assignment, from presentations to first-year research to graduate school applications, at any level of its development, from brainstorming to finishing touches.

Compared to other college writing centers, Agnes Scott’s CWS is unusual for several reasons. We are a multi-modal center, meaning we’ll tutor a range of work beyond written academic papers. Far from a remedial service, we are used by over 70% of the student body. Finally, CWS tutors can serve as course tutors for first-year classes in a role where we work collaboratively with professors to co-facilitate writing and speaking related modules.

As a CWS tutor, I have been lucky to serve as a course tutor for Leadership 101 in Fall 2017 and 2018 and English 110 in Fall 2018. A presentation I gave for one of these courses can be seen below. I also co-led the CWS’s Resources Committee in my junior and senior years, where projects have included overhauling all 100+ handouts the center produces, completely reorganizing our library, and modernizing our collection of sample papers. My favorite thing about working at the CWS is that I get to learn about every student’s diverse academic interests and passions from the work they bring into the center.

Hannah was great! She was very personable yet professional. She really helped me hone in on my writing. She was very encouraging, and didn't make me feel that some of my errors were dumb. I will DEFINITELY book an appointment again, and specifically with her.

Hannah is SUCH a great tutor. She talks about what you did well and then talks through how you can do even better. Her advice is always helpful and clear.
