As a current Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) major and Psychology minor at Agnes Scott College, I began college knowing my area of interest lay in human sexuality, especially health, rights, and justice in sexuality and reproduction, but I was unsure about what discipline through which to study this topic. Through Agnes Scott’s signature approach to the liberal arts, termed the SUMMIT program, I have been able to gain a breadth of knowledge about how I can best use my strengths to advance my core focus. I have had the ability to consider my area of interest through the lenses of psychology, French, history, business, creative writing, biology, and public health in my coursework at Agnes Scott, as well as through leadership of a student organization, paid work, community service, and internships. The broad knowledge I have gained now allows me to confidently deep-dive into my chosen approach to my field: after graduating with a Bachelor’s of Arts, I will enter nursing school in pursuit of becoming a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP).

As I continue to pursue my prerequisite courses for nursing programs, I will synthesize my knowledge of feminist and queer theory with my developing skills as a medical scientist. As a care provider, it is my hope that my rigorous healthcare knowledge and justice-oriented analytical lens will allow me to deftly treat patients who feel they can truly bring their whole selves to every appointment.

Born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, I now call Atlanta, Georgia home, but have close connections to family in Maine, Wisconsin, and New Orleans. I come from a family–extended family included–of musicians and music teachers. Although I have broken away from the family mold in some ways by pursuing WGSS and healthcare instead of the violin, which I’ve studied intensively for over 10 years, my musical background has taught me the importance of both creative exploration and measured practice. It is this balance between rigor and innovation that drew me into WGSS and sexual and reproductive rights activism–I take my work seriously, but its heart is in its opportunities for joy and connection. When I’m not studying, I can be found teaching sex education in my religious community, playing my instrument, working as a childcare provider, thrift shopping, or having coffee with friends.
