We had just been assigned our crew positions for Shadows and Suds, and even though I was not chosen to be script supervisor for either of the productions due to logistical issues, I found myself feeling more confident than ever about my future in this field. Something about just being in that environment energizes me and makes me feel at home. In fact, writing about this reminds me of when I was an extra for The 15:17 to Paris, and even though my only job was to drive around in circles for four hours, it was one of the best days of my life.

I’m incredibly excited to be the second assistant director for Suds, and I think working as a lighting technician for Shadows will be good preparation for the lighting and electric course that I plan on taking this summer. While I am fairly well-acquainted with the director of Suds, I am looking forward to strengthening that relationship. In fact, my main goal between now and the end of the semester is to network with the other students in my class. They have already been able to provide me with so many great tips regarding casting companies in the area, and making connections is absolutely vital in the film industry.

I eagerly awaited the release for months after seeing the first trailer, thinking it would be a huge step in the right direction for LGBT representation. That was probably my first mistake – is a film about a gay, white boy really that progressive? But it is the type of feel good, romantic comedy that the LGBT community never gets, and Blue turns out to be (spoiler alert) Bram, who is black and Jewish, so I had hopes of it being better than Call Me By Your Name, maybe not cinematically, but at least in terms of narrative content. My second mistake was reading the book first, thereby setting myself up for disappointment.

The book, Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, was written by a woman, Becky Albertalli. I noticed that this was a point of discussion in the promotion of the movie, but everyone emphasized that Albertalli did a lot of research on writing about an experience which she, obviously, was not personally familiar with. Although I can only have so much of a voice on this topic, I believe she did an incredibly good job. The movie, on the other hand, was directed by a man, Greg Berlanti. While I am more often than not skeptical of male directors, it makes sense that a gay man would direct a movie about a gay boy. However, while Albertalli was incredibly careful to accurately depict Simon and Bram, Berlanti absolutely butchered Abby and Leah in his adaptation.

I suppose I cannot blame Berlanti entirely – the screenplay, which greatly contributed to this botched reworking, was written by Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger. Either way, the end result is abysmal. There were subtle things that bothered me along the way: the erasure of Abby’s identity as a lower class black girl, her over-sexualized Wonder Woman costume, Lyle’s comment about how he could never be just friends with someone as hot as Abby. Yes, she is technically black, but the book makes a point to address how “weirdly segregated” Atlanta is, while the film’s only attempt at addressing racism is a comment from Simon about how Abby isn’t his type…but not because she’s black. She is definitely not lower class in the film, which we see when Simon picks her up for school. And can we talk about how they actually leave one of Simon’s sisters out of the film but add a male character whose ultimate purpose is to make a gross comment about Abby?

Anyway, the part that really got me was Leah’s declaration of love for Simon. We start to see inklings of her feelings when Leah sleeps over at Simon’s house, but I dismissed it at the time, pretending that I didn’t know exactly what was going to happen. You see, in the novel, Leah has a crush on Nick, Simon and Leah’s mutual friend. This is fine because while it is a driving factor for the story, it is not her singular, defining characteristic. Also, Nick’s straight, making Leah’s crush less of an overused trope and more of a sad reality. However, in the film, Leah seems to exist only to have an unrequited crush on Simon. She is more like a prop than an actual character.

I don’t know much about feminist theory, and I already feel like I have wandered far outside of my comfort zone by writing this, but I have to say, I am baffled by the fact that this film, which seems to relentlessly perpetuate the heterosexual male gaze, was created by a gay man. How is this possible? Maybe Berlanti wasn’t the source of these egregious examples of objectification, but he didn’t shut them down, either, making him at least partially responsible. I guess the fact of the matter is that Berlanti still benefits from male privilege, making it easier for him to overlook these injustices.

My takeaway from all of this is simple: we need more women in film.

So far, my favorite thing has been working on Tina’s podcast because I feel like I am a part of something that could really make a big impact.

I also feel like the skills I have acquired in the D-Center helped me when applying for a job with my favorite fashion blogger. All though I didn’t get the job because I couldn’t possibly have competed with someone who already had a degree and was working as a social media strategist, I made it to one of the final if not the final round of “interviews,” and I’m very proud of myself for that.

I would really love to be a course tutor for one of the sections of SUMMIT 400. I am also looking forward to learned more about how to grow my blog and social media presence.

I would love to work in film or television, especially costume design. I am excited to work in the Center for Digital and Visual Literacy because it’s not retail. (I’m only partially kidding). Seriously, though, I spend most of my time on the computer, and when I am not binge watching TV or posting on social media, I’m making gifs, tweaking coding, working in photoshop, or blogging (granted, I haven’t updated my fashion blog in awhile due to outside factors). I am really excited to become more involved in something that I love and feel like I am good at! As I mentioned, I have a variety of skills that I feel will benefit me as a D-Center tutor, including knowledge of HTML and Photoshop.

Both “movements” were driven by xenophobia. According to The New York Times, many “Leave” voters feared “being overrun by immigrants.” One of Donald Trump’s most well known claims is that he is going to build a wall on the border between Mexico and the United States, which also demonstrates a fear of foreigners. Additionally, the majority of people who voted for both of these political choices were members of the poor, uneducated working class. They wanted change, yet their uninformed decisions may have actually worsened their situations. Brexit will affect the UK in many ways over the coming years. They will no longer reap the benefits of being in the EU. Specifically, “Britain [will be leaving] the world’s largest common market,” which means that they are no longer committed to “the free movement of labor, capital, goods and services.” However, it also means that they are going to have to work very hard to develop new trade connections and maintain old ones. Additionally, London, which is currently “a financial center could be imperiled.” Moreover, the value of the pound has decreased dramatically. Because trade between Croatia and Great Britain only makes up 1% of Croatia’s GDP, Brexit will have very little impact on Croatia.
