Purpose & Context

Purpose

This portfolio serves as a way to document my academic journey and to share this journey with others in a meaningful way. It will contain excerpts of my academic and creative writing, presentations, and access to my periodically updated CV. As I progress through graduate school and my future career, I want to be able to look back and see how my current interests and skills compare to those from my time as an undergraduate.

If you would like full access to supplemental materials please contact me at emma.j.mckeon@gmail.com, or by mail at

Context

This portfolio contains a list of, and PDF links to, official research presentations I have done in the past. It also contains writing samples from various courses and on independent interests, mostly in the form of personal reflections and paper abstracts. Below is a short description of the context of these artifacts.

ArtifactsContext
Formal PresentationsThis page contains a list of all internal and external presentations I have participated in, both alone and with my other authors. I also have links to PDFs of my posters/PowerPoints, which are openly available to anyone with an Agnes Scott email address (external parties may request permission to view). I have thoroughly enjoyed presenting my research because it gives me the chance to discuss with others new information about topics I am passionate about.
Writing Samples: PsychologyI have had the chance to write many papers in my psychology coursework ranging from mock grant proposals to formal research write-ups. This section depicts my shift in interests from my first year (counseling, sensation/perception) to my current interests (social behavior, neuroscience, animal behavior).
Writing Samples: BiologyAs with my psychology major, my biology coursework involved many research papers. I became interested in biology in the beginning of my third year, and was quickly drawn to subjects like ecology and internal biological systems, which is reflected in my writing.
Writing Samples: NeuroscienceAt the intersection between my psychology major and my biology minor is neuroscience, an area of study that bridges the gap between the two fields. Thus, I have not only taken coursework in neuroscience, but have also used neuroscience writing to integrate my psychology and biology knowledge.
Writing Samples: Other SubjectsOutside of psychology, biology, and neuroscience, I also enjoy writing on topics more closely related to my education at a liberal arts college such as leadership, personal identity reflection, and institutional inequality, all of which are found in my ‘Other Subjects’ writing section.
Animals of InterestThis page contains images of animal species I’ve worked with in the past, and a list of animals I’d love to work with in the future.
My Skills & StrengthsI completed a the Strengths finder survey and was pleasantly surprised by how accurate the results were, so I decided to include them on my portfolio to give readers a more direct look at who I am as a person.
